Storage temperature for red basics wine is around 50 to 60 degrees Fahrenheit. Red wine can be severely damaged if the temperature goes above 90 degrees so on the trip home from the liquor store in the car don’t let it sit out in the open sunlight, buy the wine chilled and keep it cool and under wrap for the trip home.

The best in-home storage place for red wine is in a cool, dark, and dry cellar and avoid rapid movement of the contents when moving between locations with different temperature extremes. Always store your wine on its side with the neck slightly tilted downward to keep the cork moist at all times. Don’t always rush to drink the wine you bought today at tonight’s dinner. Red wine can continue to benefit from additional aging in your home, most for at least two years, some longer.

You can store open wine for up to two weeks without a major loss of its characteristics but for best results use opened wine within two days. If you drink more than half of a bottle you should move the remaining wine to a smaller bottle to reduce the amount of flavor robbing oxygen it has to live with. Use a stopper and handle the wine as it were a new full bottle, on its side in a cool dark place. The best basics wine policy overall is to finish a bottle once its been opened.
