Eating lots of sugary drinks helps to not only have an increased risk of obesity, diabetes and heart disease. Now a new study found that consumption of these products may also be associated with hypertension. “Eat less sugary drinks with corn syrup or much fructose can lower blood pressure,” conclude the authors of an investigation.
Researchers at Louisiana State University (USA) found that the reduction of a can a day meant a drop of 1.8 millimeters of mercury systolic (top) and 1.1 in diastolic (minimum).
As argued by the main author of the research, Liwei Chen, “estimated that the reduction of three millimeters of mercury (mm Hg) in systolic blood pressure may reduce stroke mortality by 8% and mortality from coronary heart disease in a 5% [...] This could be achieved by reducing the consumption of sweetened beverages, “such as soda, lemonade, fruit drinks … With diet soda, however, the investigators found no relationship.
This finding is relevant in cases where the individual eats more units a day, for example, in an American context, where the consumption of sugary drinks is high. The authors of this study, the average is 2.3 cans a day. However, “in the Spanish context, where the average is less than a can a day, the reduction is not clinically significant and therefore would not be necessary to remove the only patient with hypertension can you drink a day, yes if you drink 10, “said Lluis Serra, President of the Spanish Academy of Nutrition and Food Science. He adds: “What certainly significantly reduces blood pressure (15 or 20 mm Hm) is the DASH diet (in English dietary modifications to Stop Hypertension) low-salt, skimmed milk, rich in fruit and vegetables, low in red meat and no alcohol. ”
The researchers analyzed data from a total of 810 adults aged between 25 and 79 years with prehypertension (120 to 80 mm Hg and between 139 and 89 mm Hg) and a first stage of hypertension (140 to 90 Hg and 159 mm and 99 mm Hg). Everyone participated in a study that lasted 18 months and during this time were assessed weight loss, exercise and healthy diet to prevent and control hypertension.
Even considering and controlling risk factors for hypertension (including obesity), “blood pressure change was significant,” they said those responsible for this work. “Our findings, therefore, can be an important dietary strategy for lowering blood pressure and related diseases, as hypertension is still one of the most important and common health problems in America.” Also in Spain, where approximately 30% of the population is hypertensive.
In any case qualifies the president of the Spanish Academy of Nutrition, “is not as important eating a soda or a particular food as the overall diet all day.” Madrid. Laura Tardón.
