If the brain controls the body then the thyroid controls the brain. A simple chain of command but in reality the brain is the controller just like the computer on your desk. It will just sit there until it is fed a program or set of parameters or instructions for it to follow and become useful. To your brain and the things that it controls, the thyroid is like the program or operating system that tells the brain what functions to perform and gives it the motivation to do them.

The thyroid then throttles or regulates the rate at which the brain performs each task. Since the brain throttles basic metabolic state all sorts of things from being tired to growing strong bones is in effect at the mercy of the thyroid gland. Even production and secretion of other bio-fluids are sped up or slowed down with thyroid output. So you can easily see that an underactive thyroid can bring the body mechanism to a chaotic state.

Hyperthyroidism drops everything into sleep mode that has been waiting for the thyroid hormones to kick start it. The more the wait the more little systems that don’t mean a lot at first start to mean a great deal as they slow down and play dead. Little aches and pains accumulate and start acting like arthritis. That annoying little memory problem is now a full blown disorder and has doctors diagnosing early Alzheimer’s caused by nothing more than a thyroid gland that refuses to ignite the systems relying on its signal.
