The New Dad Guide To Nappy Changing
New dads all dread one thing in particular – the nappy change . While it may seem like a daunting and terrible chore to be done, nappy changing is really quite simple. First, establish that the nappy is dirty and needs to be changed. Indicators of a dirty nappy include odor, puffiness, and dark places usually seen near the leg openings. Take a deep breath and relax. You can do this. The next thing you must do is to remove the dirty nappy. Unstick the tabs on the front of the nappy located below the baby’s belly button. Remove the nappy and dispose of it. If it is a particularly dirty nappy, use the front part for the initial wipe. Then, using a baby wipe, clean baby’s bum thoroughly.
Babies have all kinds of rolls, nooks, and crevasses; make sure to clean each one to avoid a rash. Locate a fresh nappy. Open it up and slide the side with the tabs attached under the baby’s bum. Fold the front up and over baby so that the top comes to rest on or near baby’s belly button. The tabs are folded slightly to hide the sticky bit. Unfold to reveal the sticky strip and bring the tabs around baby’s waist on either side to secure to the front of the nappy. Some tabs will not actually be sticky, but you will still see a little strip. Various nappy manufacturers use different methods to fasten nappies. The vast majority will be sticky or velcro-like. Make sure that the little ruffle that goes around baby’s leg is pulled out from under the nappy. This is your last line of defense against a blowout. Breathe a sigh of relief. You did it! It may not be the best looking nappy on the block, but baby is clean and ready to produce another dirty nappy for you to change. You will get better and the process will get faster and easier as you go along. Just as with everything else, practice makes perfect.
